Sandtroopers Wear Ammo Pouches
Every sandtrooper in the “Star Wars: A New Hope” wore ammo pouches with
their armor. Now, most of them wore them attached to their front left
shoulder strap of their backpack, and some wore them on their belts. I
can’t say that every single sandtrooper in the film was issued an ammo
pouch, but most of them did sport them in some way or another.
A couple months ago Bob and Mary Walton sold me an ammo pouch that was
green in color, but the ammo pouches in the film were all black.
Therefore, that meant I would have to purchase black leather dye to color
it black, so that it would be accurate to the movie. I purchased a four
ounce bottle of USMC Black colored leather dye on eBay for five dollars
(eight dollars with shipping), and it arrived in just a couple of days.
Before I could just apply this dye to my ammo pouch, I first had to clean
the leather of the pouch to remove any left over materials and dirt that
might have been on it. All I used for this was warm water and a few paper
towels. After thoroughly cleaning the leather I opened up the bottle of
dye, and got myself ready for my very first attempt at changing the color
of something that was made out of leather.
Making it Black
The bottle came with a brush applicator (metal wire with a fuzzy ball
on the end of it), so I didn’t have to worry about what I was going to use
to apply the dye to the leather. At first I thought I was going to have to
use a rag, which would have been extremely messy, but with this wire brush
I knew it would be a piece of cake. Applying the dye was a no-brainer and
took about four applications to get it just right. Some areas are a flat
black and others are a bit shinier, but overall it looks very well done. I
was quite impressed with how it turned out, especially since it was my
first time doing this.
I can’t wait to wear this for the very first time the next time I go
out trooping.
